Egypt AH 1255(23) 10 para
The coin shown is a silver ten para from the reign of Sultan Abdul Mejid. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan, with the denomination written below (abbreviated as the letter P for para) with the number 10 above. A crude floral design sits right of the toughra. The reverse carries the accession date and the text minted in Misr (Misr is Arabic for Egypt). The date is written as AH 1255 year 23, which translates to about 1860 AD. Uslu[1] lists this issue as rare.
The example shown was sold as part of lot 163 on Dec 13, 2011 at the Kunker Auction #199 in Osnabrück, Germany, for 120 Euros. The catalog description reads:
"OSMANISCHE MÜNZEN Münzen nach der Münzreform von 1845 Silberprägungen der Münzstätte Misr (Kairo) 10 Para 1255 H., 19, 20, 22 und 23, Misr (Kairo). 0,33; 0,40; 0,36 und 0,34 g. 4 Stück. Seltene Jahrgänge in überdurchschnittlichen Erhaltungen. Sehr schön und vorzüglich (Ottoman coins of the reform of 1845, Cairo mint: ten paras, accession date 1255, regnal years 19, 20, 22 and 23. Scarce dates in this condition, very fine to extremely fine.)"
