Egypt AH 1255(17) 5 para
This specimen was lot 2334 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 70 CHF (about US$85 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"OSMANISCHES REICH | ´Abd al-Majîd, 1255-1277 H./1839-1861 AD, 5 Para 1255 H./Jahr 17, Misr (Kairo). Auf mittlerem Schrötling, Qustantînîya, Tughra mit Blume über Regierungsjahr, Münzstättenangabe und Datum des Regierungsanfangs um die Wertzahl. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Turkey, Abdul Mejid, 1839-61, five para of AH 1255, year 17, Cairo mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"
The coin shown is a copper five para from the reign of Sultan Abdul Mejid. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan, with the year of issue written below (year 17 of the sultan). A floral design sits right of the toughra. The reverse carries an abundance of text written around the periphery, which includes the name Misr (Egypt) and the fact that the coin was struck there. In the center of the coin is the number 5, for five para.
