This specimen was lot 418 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "EGYPT: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AV ¼ zeri mahbub, Misr, AH1223, with the phrase 'izza nasruhu instead of a regnal year above the obverse, struck during the first few years of Mahmud 's reign, VF-EF, RR, ex Ahmed Sultan Collection. Based on a full zeri mahbub of this reign, with its weight standard of about 2.40 g." This type, lacking a regnal date, was struck AH 1223 only. Wikipedia comments, "After the French were expelled, power was seized in 1805 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, an Albanian military commander of the Ottoman army in Egypt. While he carried the title of viceroy of Egypt, his subordination to the Ottoman porte was merely nominal. Muhammad Ali massacred the Mamluks and established a dynasty that was to rule Egypt until the revolution of 1952."
