Egypt AH 1223(19) 5 para
The coin shown is a 5 para, composition billon, from the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan enclosed by a dotted border. The date is written on the reverse as AH 1223 year 19, which translates to about 1825 AD.
The specimen shown was sold as part of lot 13204 on Sept 9, 2004 at the 2004 September (HWCA) Signature Sale #357, for $184. The catalog description reads "Mahmud II Billon 5 Para, four coins representing the second series of this coinage, year 18, Fine but corroded, and 19, dark VF with minor oxidation, and KM166, year 22, crude XF and 23, Fine. From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
