Egypt AH 1171 1/2 zeri mahbub
This coin is a gold half zeri mahbub, struck during the reign of Mustafa III (1757-1774 AD). The date AH 1171 translates to 1757 AD. During this period, coins minted in Egypt were very similar in appearance to those struck in other parts of the Ottoman Empire. The obverse features the royal cypher of the sultan.
This specimen was lot 13158 in the 2004 September (HWCA) Signature Sale #357 by Heritage Auctions. It sold on Sept 9, 2004 for $299. The catalog description noted, "Mustafa III gold 1/2 Zeri Mahbub 1171AH (1757). Bold and lustrous AU, holed twice near the edges, and a small edge crack. Very rare type - we have seen no other offerings of this type in the market. Highly underrated in the standard catalog. Mintmark XXXVIII. From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
