Ecuador SB119-40135r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40135 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $1,860. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. Sucre, 1997. PCGS PROOF-69 DEEP CAMEO. Struck for the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the Central Bank with a mintage of 2,000 pieces. Boldly cameoed with a sprinkling of light tone over both sides. Highly popular as a type due to the illustration of an 1833 Ecuadorian Escudo in the reverse centers." Despite the self-congratulatory theme of this NCLT, the sucre collapsed entirely in 1999 and was replaced by the United States dollar.

Recorded mintage: 2,000 proofs.

Specification: 31.10 g, 0.900 fine gold, 40 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-12; KM-111.
