The first specimen was lot 1749 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $176.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR: AR sucre, Santiago, 1888. Assayer DT, a few small scratches at center reverse, two-year type, light tone, Choice EF." The second specimen was lot 1590 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "ECUADOR: AR sucre, Santiago (Chile), 1888, assayer DT, two-year type struck in Chile, light traces of surface hornsilver, About Unc." After a period of striking reales, pesos and escudos which must be regarded as a failure, Ecuador ceased minting coins in 1862. In 1884, the government tried again, this time with coinage produced on contract by the Heaton mint in Birmingham, England. A new currency conforming to the Latin Monetary Union was introduced, the sucre, with its division the centavo. Silver sucres were produced at Heaton 1884-95, at Santiago, Chile, 1888-89, and at Lima, Peru, 1890-97. The specimen shown is from Santiago. The type is not common but reasonably available in circulated condition.

Recorded mintage: 373,000 plus 100,000 from Heaton.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-53.2.
