This specimen was lot 22199 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Democratic Republic. 5 Mark, 1978. NGC PROOF-65. Death of Friedrich Klopstock anniversary commemorative." The Communist regime of East Germany issued a long string of commemoratives in seventies and eighties for sale to Westerners to raise foreign exchange. Most were poorly designed and ugly but this one, honoring poet Friedrich Klopstock, is decent. Many of these are quite scarce but the demand is low at present.
Recorded mintage: 96,000 plus 4,500 proofs.
Specification: copper-nickel.
Catalog reference: KM-67.
