East Africa 1957-KN cent
This specimen was lot 73419 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH EAST AFRICA. Cent, 1957-KN. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Red Brown Gold Shield. A melange of red, electrified amber, and violet combine on this engaging near-Gem, fully ablaze in radiant brilliance. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." East Africa was an administrative grouping of the British colonies of Kenya, Uganda and British Somaliland. Tanganyika was added in 1919 after it was seized from the Germans. The original currency system was 100 cents = one florin (2 shillings). In 1922, this was changed to 100 cents = one shilling. This type is known from the London mint, Heaton mint (H), and King's Norton mint (KN). The coinage has been obsolete since the member colonies obtained independence in the early 1960's. This type was struck 1954-62 and all dates are common.
