East Africa 1949 10 cents
East Africa was an administrative grouping of the British colonies of Kenya, Uganda and British Somaliland. Tanganyika was added in 1919 after it was seized from the Germans. The original currency system was 100 cents = one florin (2 shillings). In 1922, this was changed to 100 cents = 1 shilling. In 1920 Uganda was dropped from the title on the reverse. The coinage has been obsolete since the member colonies obtained independence in the early 1960's. This specimen was lot 1437 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "EAST AFRICA: George VI, 1937-1952, 10 cents, 1949, PCGS graded PF62 RB." This type was struck 1949-52 and is fairly common tho the proofs are rare.
