Künker sale 293, lot 755

This specimen was lot 755 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,826 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

MON · HOMAG · CIVIT · I · TREMON · Í Adler, den Kopf nach l. gewandt, zu den Seiten die Signatur G · - H · (Gerhard Hüls, Stempelschneider in Köln, 1726-1750), im Abschnitt DOM · CONS · NOS · IN · / · 17 · PACE · 42 ·//CAR · VII · D · G · - ROM · IMP · S · A · B · R · Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz und umgelegter Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Dortmund, thaler of 1742, struck in the name of Charles VII. Obverse: eagle displayed, head left, divides engraver's initials; reverse: armored, laureate bust right with Order of the Golden Fleece. Very rare, very attractive example with beautiful toning, extremely fine.)"

This very rare issue is the last thaler from this locale. It was struck for the pretender Charles VII, the last serious challenger to the Hapsburg claim to be Holy Roman Emperor.
