Dombes in 1789, from Shepherd's Atlas

This specimen was lot 74353 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Dombes. 15 Deniers (Quinzain), 1644. Trevoux Mint. Prince Gaston. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. Attractive despite granularity over the surfaces. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection." This specimen was offered again as lot 74781 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $65. Gaston, duc d'Orleans, was the younger brother of king Louis XIII. He was a lifelong troublemaker but so long as the king was unable to produce an heir, his life was safe, no matter how many treasonable conspiracies he was involved in. The Dombes region lies south of Franche Comte and west of Savoy and was a fief of the Montpensier family, whose heiress Gaston married in 1626. He struck coins for the region until his death in 1660 and the area reverted to the French crown on the death of his daughter in 1693. This type was struck 1643-44 and is not mentioned in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.94 g, billon.

Catalog reference: KM-unlisted, Dombe-187.
