Fr Somaliland 1971 franc rev DSLR.jpg

This type was minted in France 1969, 1971 and 1975 for the French Territory of the Afar and Issas. Originally called French Somaliland when it was seized from native chiefs in the 1870's, it was renamed Djibouti when it was granted independence in 1977. Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, the current president, has been in office since 1999. He is the nephew of Hassan Gouled Aptidon, president 1977-99. Altho the country has remained stable in a conflict-ridden region, the price is authoritarian and sometimes corrupt rule.
