Desana (1630-41) tallero Dav-3896
This specimen was lot 1352 in Numismatica Genevensis SA Auction 17 (Geneva, November 2022), where it sold for 18,000 CHF (about US$22,680 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"ITALIE, Desana, Antonio Maria Tizzone, 1598-1641. Tallero non daté. Buste cuirassé à droite / Armoiries couronnées. Exemplaire exceptionnel. Triton XVI (janvier 2013), 1457. (county of Desana, Anthony Mary Tizzone, 1598-1641, undated tallero. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms. Exceptional specimen.)"
Today Desana is an insignificant village in the Piedmont region of Italy, population 1,085 as of 2004. It was a semi-independent enclave in the duchy of Savoy, ruled by the Tizzoni 1411-1693. A mint was opened in 1510 to strike imitations of coins of neighboring states. Antonio Maria II was count 1598-1641.
