Denmark 1826-IC FF speciedaler Dav-73
This specimen was lot 20328 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Speciedaler, 1826-IC FF. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Exuding enormous eye appeal with great luster and faint golden tone. VERY RARE quality for the date with no equal certified examples at PCGS or NGC and only one comparable piece in archived auction records, that coin sold well over a decade ago in a 2004 Numismatica Genevensis sale where it brought a hammer of 775 CHF. From the Keystone Collection. Ex: Coin Galleries sale, August 1989, Lot #593." This specimen is a product of the Altona mint. Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. Until 1813, 1 ducat = 2 speciedaler = 12 mark = 192 skilling Danske. After the reform of 1813, 1 frederiks d'or = 5 speciedaler = 10 rigsbankdaler = 960 rigsbankskilling. In 1854, the speciedaler was dropped but the remaining denominations were unchanged. In 1874, all the old denominations were terminated in favor of one krone = 100 øre, which system is still in use, tho the krone is no longer silver. King Frederik VI ruled 1808-39.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.89 g, 0.875 fine silver, .812 troy oz ASW, lettered edge.
