1882 one peso

The specimen shown is a one peso note issued in 1882 by the Banco Nacional de Mexico and overprinted for Veracruz. It is very rare. Soon after, the issue of notes smaller than five pesos was prohibited.

These specimens were sold in Heritage sale 3519 (Long Beach, CA, September 2012) for $___. The catalog description noted, "Mexico Banco Nacional de Mexico 1 Peso 1.1.1885 Notes. Overprinted and Roulette Punched "Guadalajara" Fine Overprinted and Roulette Punched "San Luis Potosí" Fine." Frampton, et al., note various issues of this note dated 1885-1913 along with numerous overprints (M296c thru M296l). The 1913 issue is very common but the 1880's issues are scarce to rare.

This 1889 issue was overprinted for the bank's branch in Chihuahua. It is one of the more common overprints.

This 1913 issue was issued in large quantities, President Huerta having relieved the bank of holding reserves of bullion. It may be the most common banco.

Just as two dollar notes were not popular in the United States, two peso notes were not popular in Mexico. This 1913 issue is one of the few that are common.

The specimen shown is a five pesos note issued in 1890 by the Banco Nacional de Mexico and overprinted for the branch in Veracruz. It is common. A Veracruz overprint dated 1902 is known. Frampton, et al., note dozens of overprints for this issue.

This 1902 issue was issued by the Banco Nacional and overprinted for its branch in Puebla. While it is scarce compared to the very common 1913 ten pesos, it is not rare.

This 1912 issue was issued in substantial quantities, President Huerta having relieved the bank of holding reserves of bullion. It may be the most common banco of this denomination. Even so, it is twice the price of a twenty pesos (M300) and triple the price of a ten pesos (M299).

1909 one hundred pesos

Heritage sale 3514, lot 18251

This specimen was sold in Heritage sale 3514 (Long Beach, CA, September 2011) for $287.50. The catalog description noted, "Mexico El Banco Nacional De Mexico 100 Pesos 1.9.1909 An issued design that is very elusive above Fine. PMG Very Fine 30." Frampton, et al., note various issues of this note dated 1885-1911 along with numerous overprints (M302e thru M302w). This is the most common issue yet it is still expensive.
