Sierra Leone obtained her independence from Great Britain in 1961 but was afflicted with authoritarian regimes and frequent coups d'etat. A civil war in 1991-2001 led to the deaths of some 50,000 people and rebel trafficking in diamonds led to the nickname "blood diamonds". Since then, stability has returned but poverty, corruption and disease (especially Ebola) remain obstacles. As of April 2025, US$1 = 22.7 leones. These notes were printed by Thomas de la Rue (TDLR) of London.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 5 leones: 128 x 65 mm; 10 leones: 135 x 68 mm; 20 leones: 138 x 70 mm.
