Covina National Bank, California
large size $20
This specimen was lot 14714 in Heritage auction 456 (Orlando, FL, January 2008), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Covina, CA - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 651 The Covina NB Ch. # 8222. This is immeasurably the scarcer of Covina's two issuers, with the census showing just three large notes extant. Covina was Charley Colver's home town (he served as its mayor for many years), so it comes as no surprise that he had two of the three large notes in his holdings, both of which sold in 1999 and promptly disappeared into a long term Covina holding. This is the only other large note in the census, and, while it is hardly a high grade piece, offers the only opportunity for the foreseeable future for collectors to own a large note from this bank. Very Good or a bit better, with a small nick in the top margin. From The Kansas City Collection."
small size $10, type I
This specimen was lot 17671 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $4,370. The catalog description[1] noted, "Covina, CA - $10 1929 Ty. 1 The Covina NB Ch. # 8222, By far the scarcer of Covina's two issuing banks, with the census from here skewed by the existence of two serial number one Type 2 sheets, neither of which has ever been offered publicly. Only five single small notes are in the census, with the Horwedel collection boasting two of that number. This is the only Type 1 $10 in the census at present. Fine. Ex-Currency Auctions of America's May, 1993 sale, lot 1461."
small size $10, type II
This specimen was lot 1506 in Stack's Bowers Baltimore Auction (Baltimore, November 2013), where it sold for $8,225. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare Covina California Small Size, National Bank Notes. Covina, California. $10 1929 Ty. 2. Fr. 1801-2. The Covina NB. Charter #8222. Very Fine. A highly scarce small size California note which is one of only six recorded examples according to the NBN census, excluding two known number one small sheets. The note is also the highest quality of the six regular numbered pieces with a census grade of VF-EF. We feel a Very Fine grade is appropriate for the quality and this note was last sold in an October 2006 sale where it fetched a healthy $8,050.00. Well embossed overprints are easily found and the note shows with still detailed inks throughout. The most recent offering was a PMG Fine 15 graded $10 Type One note which brought $4,406.25 this January at a public sale. This prize offering will certainly grab the attention of California collectors and is a note which should see spirited bidding."
small size $20, type I
This specimen was lot 20652 in Heritage auction 3567 (Long Beach, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Rare Escondido, CA Large Size National Escondido, CA - $20 1902 Date Back Fr. 643 The Escondido NB Ch. # (P)8040. A just plain rare note from one of the toughest multi-bank towns in California. This San Diego County community had three issuing banks, one of which has only a single note reported and the other two available only when collections such as Colver, Horwedel, and High Desert come on the market. This offering is one of just six notes in the census and the only Date Back of any denomination. A pleasing mid-grade PMG Very Fine 25 with just a small tear, it is the first note from this charter to cross the public auction block in over a dozen years."
small size $20, type II
This specimen was lot 17672 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $5,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Covina, CA - $20 1929 Ty. 2 The Covina NB Ch. # 8222, An even nicer example from this just plain rare bank. Although Charley Colver had three small notes from here (no surprise, as Covina was his home town), only one was as nice as this, with that example realizing $4125 over five years ago. Our estimate here may well prove conservative. Very Fine."
