This type was struck 1997 and 1999 for Costa Rica. The 1997 was made at Santiago and the 1999 at Bogota. It was the first issue of this denomination for circulation; previous fifty colones had been NCLT's sold to collectors. Subsequent issues were made with slight variations in 2002, 2006 and 2007.
Recorded mintage: 25,000,000.
Specification: 7.8 g, copper-aluminum-nickel, 27.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
