This fifty centavos was struck in Bogotá for Colombia, of a type issued 1965 only. It is accompanied by a copper-nickel twenty centavos. Jorge Gaitan was the mayor of Bogotá and the Liberal party candidate for president when he was assassinated in 1948. His murder touched off a three year civil war between the Liberals and the Conservatives in Colombia. When the Liberals obtained the presidency in 1965, their first act was to issue this coin in honor of their martyr.
