The first specimen was lot 42058 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $26,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Very Rare 'Cocobola' 1888 50 Centavos. COLOMBIA. 1888-B 50 Centavos. Bogotá mint. AU Detail — Cleaned (PCGS). A classic rarity with a fascinating history, withdrawn from circulation after stories spread of President Rafael Nunez's wife having modeled for the portrait. The nickname Cocobola was inspired by a contemporary criminal who burned Panama City in Colombia's northernmost province, which was enough to force this design's quick eviction from pocket change. Restrepo reports that just five examples of the 1888 issue are known. This piece is natural gray with some handling and trivial scuffs, but no heavy cleaning, just minor hairlines. Quite attractive for the type with only minor problems, and a great rarity in the series." This rare type was struck 1887-88 only along with an issue using the regular Wyon head struck in 0.835 fine silver (KM 186.1, see the second specimen). The second specimen was lot 44443 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 50 Centavos, 1888. Bogota Mint. MS-62 (PCGS). Lustrous and untoned, somewhat weak strike in centers. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins."

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 12.5 g, 0.500 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 185, Restrepo 405.2; the second specimen KM-186.1; Restrepo-406.1.
