Colombia 1838-P RU 16 pesos
This specimen was lot 12147 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1838-RU 16 Pesos. Popayán mint. MS-61 (PCGS). Light yellow gold with highly reflective surfaces. A little softly struck in some areas of the periphery, including below the date, but flashy and very attractive. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Stack's sale of May 1971, lot 845." This type, struck at Popayán 1837-46, replaced the earlier eight escudos (KM 82.2) and is identical in size and weight. It was also produced at Bogotá. Assayer RU (= UR) is listed for 1827-41.
