Heritage sale 3010, lot 20779

This type was struck 1822-38 at Popayán and Bogotá. This type is one of the commonest gold coins of South America but the recent rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 20779 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1833/22-UR Popayán, AU50 ANACS, an attractive piece struck on a problem-free planchet, scarce overdate variety. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold."
