Cologne (1705) thaler Dav-2183
This specimen was lot 3971 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,852 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖLN, STADT, Reichstaler o. J. (1705), auf die Huldigung für Josef I. Ansicht der Stadt von der Deutzer Seite mit Schiffen am Rheinufer//Geharnischtes Brustbild Josefs I. r. mit Lorbeerkranz. R Vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Cologne, undated thaler for the coronation of Joseph I. Obverse: city view; reverse: laureate, armored bust of the emperor. Scarce, extremely fine.)"
Die Vorderseitenumschrift des vorliegenden Reichstalers VIDI LVNAM ADORARE ME heißt: "Ich habe gesehen, daß der Mond mich bewundert" und bezieht sich auf die Lage der Stadt an einem Rheinbogen, wodurch ihr Grundriß wie eine Mondsichel erscheint. Die Umschrift verkürzt somit Genesis (1. Buch Mose) 37, 9, wo es heißt (in der Vulgata): "Aliud quoque vidit somnium quod narrans fratribus, ait: Vidi per somnium, quasi solem, et lunam, et stellas undecim adorare me." (Und er hatte noch einen zweiten Traum, den erzählte er seinen Brüdern und sprach: "Ich habe noch einen Traum gehabt, siehe, die Sonne und der Mond und die Sterne neigten sich vor mir"). Die Wertangabe 8/9 Reichsfuß d. h. 8 aus der rauhen, 9 aus der feinen Mark hielt man in Köln für nötig, da zuletzt Taler nach dem leichteren burgundischen Fuß geprägt worden waren. Der Stempelschneider dieser Münze war aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach J. Selter; eine von ihm signierte Huldigungsmedaille von 1705 zeigt das gleiche Brustbild des Kaisers. (The obverse legend of the present Reichstaler, VIDI LVNAM ADORARE ME translates as, "I have seen that the moon admires me" and refers to the location of the city on a bend of the Rhine, which makes its street plan look like a crescent moon. The transcription thus shortens Genesis (Genesis 1) 37, 9, where it says (in the Vulgate): Aliud quoque vidit somnium quod narrans fratribus, ait: Vidi per somnium, quasi solem, et lunam, et stellas undecim adorare me. (And he had a second dream, which he told his brothers and said: "I had another dream, behold, the sun and the moon and the stars were leaning in front of me"). The value 8/9 indicates the fineness. This was considered necessary in Cologne, since the last thaler had been minted after the lighter Burgundian standard. The die cutter of this coin was most likely J. Selter; a medal of homage signed by him from 1705 shows the same half-length portrait of the emperor)"
The city and the archbishop both issued coinage tho the archbishop did not issue coins on this occasion. This type is also known dated 1705.
