Künker sale 406, lot 4014

This specimen was lot 4014 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,231 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖLN, ERZBISTUM, Wilhelm von Gennep, 1349-1362. 1/4 Goldgulden o. J. (um 1357), ohne Angabe der Münzstätte (Riel). GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 321, Osnabrück 2019, Nr. 6687 und der Slg. Prof. Wiemers u. a. Auktion Kricheldorf 49, Freiburg 2017, Nr. 1312. Erworben von der Münzhandlung Hans Linnartz, Köln. (archbishopric of Cologne, William of Gennep, 1349-62, quarter goldgulden, circa 1357, without mintmark. Extremely rare, very fine.)"

Both the city and the archbishop of Cologne (or Koln) issued gold ducats and it takes a keen eye to tell them apart.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: Fr-783; Felke 66 leicht var.; Noss 113.
