Citizens National Bank of Colton, Calfornia
small size $5, type I
This specimen was lot 17659 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $1,610. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colton, CA - $5 1929 Ty. 1 The Citizens NB Ch. # 13356, A scarce note on a bank where, for some reason, virtually every example we've seen is low grade or otherwise impaired, with even the Colver specimen grading only Very Good. This piece is a happy exception. Nice Fine-Very Fine, considerably closer to the higher grade here than the lower. Purchased in CAA's St. Louis sale of October, 1995, lot 1750."
small size $5, type II
This specimen was lot 5750 in Stack's Bowers Baltimore Auction (Baltimore, March 2012), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[1] noted, "National Bank Notes. Colton, California. $5 1929 Ty. 2. Fr. 1800-2. The Citizens NB. Charter #13356. Fine-Very Fine. A highly scarce California charter with this discovery note bringing the population to 13 known pieces with all being small size example. Public appearances have been quite infrequent as of late with only a single record since 2006 where a Fine note brought $2,300.00 in January of 2011. This note borders on a full VF grade with even wear and nice appeal. Well margined and likely to receive significant attention from bidders."
