Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 54676

This specimen was lot 54676 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Provisional Government of China. Chiao, Year 31 (1942). PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. A very sharply struck Gem quality coin with flashy luster." The Provisional Government was another Japanese puppet state before and during World War Two. The central bank therein issued a series of aluminum coins in 1941-43, including one, five and ten fen (shown here). They do not have high catalog values but are seldom seen.
