China (1903-05) 10 cash

Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 52187

This specimen was lot 52187 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CHINA. 10 Cash, ND (1903-05). NGC MS-65 Brown. Variety with eight-pointed stars on either side of dragon. A truly resounding Gem with a tremendous amount of luster and many hints of mint red." This type was struck in 1903-05, but is undated. It is an example of the standard unified general coinage, from the Tientsin mint, and was meant to offer a unified alternative to the proliferation of provincial mint coins.
