This specimen was lot 1727 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE: Republic, AR peso, 1897-So, several rim nicks and field marks, key date, Fine." The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1895-97. It is the first (but not the last) reduction in size from the full-size pesos of the 1890's. The next type, issued 1902-05, was only 20 grams, 0.700 fine silver. Oscar Roty's defiant condor, first used in 1895, appeared on virtually all Chilean silver and copper-nickel coins until 1940.
