Ceylon 1908 cent

Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23323

This specimen was lot 23323 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CEYLON. Cent, 1908. London Mint. PCGS MS-63 Brown Gold Shield. A cent exhibiting faint glossy surfaces and some mint red in the protected areas." This type was issued 1904-10. It is common in all grades and was accompanied by a quarter cent and half cent. Cents were struck for Ceylon as late as 1945. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
