This specimen was lot 70520 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $870. The catalog description[1] noted, "CENTRAL AMERICAN UNION. Bronze 2 Centavos Ensayo (Pattern), 1889. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Most of the mint red still shines though with some blue hints in the fields and on the bust. The trial issue emanates from the ill-fated, brief union between Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador." This pattern is accompanied by a similar one centavo. We don't know where it was made but Brussels or Paris seem likely.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-E22.
