This specimen was lot 3604 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $114. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAMBODIA: Norodom Sihanouk, 2nd reign, 1993-2004, AR 3000 riels, 2001, Four-Faced Buddha, mintage of only 5,700 pieces, PCGS graded Proof 69 DCAM, R3 (Daniel), ex Howard A. Daniel III Collection." Wikipedia comments,
"Norodom Sihanouk (1922-2012) was a member of the Cambodian royal house who led the country as King and Prime Minister. During his lifetime, Cambodia was under various regimes, from French colonial rule (until 1953), a Japanese puppet state (1945), an independent kingdom (1953–1970), a military republic (1970–1975), the Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979), a Vietnamese-backed communist regime (1979–1989), a transitional communist regime (1989–1993) to eventually another kingdom (since 1993)."
Actual power was held by strongman Hun Sen, prime minister 1985-93 and 1998-2023. As of May 2025, US$1 = 4,006 riels.
