Cambodia 1860 5 centimes
This specimen was lot 1050 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAMBODIA: Norodom I, 1860-1904, AE 5 centimes, 1860, a superb quality example! PCGS graded Proof 65 RB, ex Charles W. Lueders III Collection." In 1860, Norodom ordered a series of patterns from Europe (mint not known but likely Paris or Brussels) for a proposed milled coinage which never came off. Silver piastres, four francs, two francs, one francs, fifty centimes and twenty-five centimes and bronze ten, five, two and one centimes were prepared, all conforming to French standards. Later, pieforts and off-metal strikes were made and sold to collectors, leading to a profusion of listings in the Unusual World Coins.
Recorded mintage: supposedly 11,467,000 plus proofs but this coin is never seen circulated.
Specification: 5 g, copper or bronze.
