Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71617

This specimen was lot 71617 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 5 Leva, 1974. Sofia Mint. PCGS PROOF-67 Deep Cameo. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Alexander Stamboliiski, this proof issue offers a great cameo nature through its frosted devices and heavily mirrored fields." Wikipedia comments,

"Aleksandar Stoimenov Stamboliyski (Bulgarian: Александър Стоименов Стамболийски; 1 March 1879 – 14 June 1923) was the prime minister of Bulgaria from 1919 until 1923."

He was ousted in a coup, then captured, tortured and murdered by the royal secret police. This module was used for NCLT's throughout the seventies.
