Sincona sale 33, lot 2073

This specimen was lot 2073 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"BULGARIEN, Boris III. 1918-1943 2 Lewa 1941. Ausgabe in Eisen. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. (kingdom of Bulgaria, Boris III, 1918-43, two leva of 1943, struck in iron. Rare in this condition, Good extremely fine.)"

This type was originally struck in copper-nickel in 1925. When a new issue was organized, material shortages forced its issue in iron, along with a one, five and ten leva (KM 37a, 39a, 40a). This proved unsatisfactory, so the 1943 issue was done in nickel plated steel. Bulgaria was on the losing side of World War Two and was forcibly converted to Communism by the Red Army.

Recorded mintage: 15,000,000.

Specification: 4.97 g, iron, 23.1 mm diameter, this specimen 4.97 g.

Catalog reference: KM 38a.
