Sincona sale 22, lot 1264

This specimen was lot 1264 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Celle, Herzogtum, Johannes + 1628, Sohn Wilhelms und Bruder Christians von Minden Taler 1628. Clausthal Auf seinen Tod. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian (1611-33), thaler of 1628, Clausthal mint, on the death of the duke's nephew John, good very fine.)"

Christian was the younger brother of the duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle and was bishop 1599-1625 and duke 1611-33 and attempted to keep the Thirty Years War away from his domain. He was succeeded in Minden by Francis of Wartenberg, a Catholic, but the Treaty of Westphalia converted the diocese to a secular principality and awarded it in 1648 to the elector of Brandenburg. His younger brother, Augustus, erstwhile bishop of Ratzeburg, succeeded to the duchy. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. This type is rare.
