Künker sale 354, lot 5582

This specimen was lot 5582 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$5,010 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-HARBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm, 1603-1642. Reichstaler 1642, Zellerfeld, auf seinen Tod am 30. März. Mit richtiger Angabe des Alters LXXIIX auf der Rückseite. R Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Köhlmoos, Auktion Münzen und Medaillen AG 91, Basel 2001, Nr. 161. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Harburg, William, 1603-42, thaler of 1642, Zellerfeld mint, on his death on March 30, with his age on the reverse corrected to read LXXIIX. Very attractive example with handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

The Brunswick-Harburg line, founded in 1521 by Otto the Elder, fell extinct in 1642 with the death of Wilhelm as commemorated here. The domain passed to Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, which itself lapsed in 1705. This one year type was accompanied by a half thaler (KM 45), quarter thaler (KM 44) and eighth thaler (KM 43). The last issues from this locale are a half thaler and thaler minted in 1665 on the death of his sister.
