Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 750

This specimen was lot 750 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €370 (about US$462 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, BRETAGNE, Duché, Jean IV (1345-1399), AR blanc à la targe, Nantes. D/ Targe échancrée, chargée de six mouchetures. R/ Croix cantonnée de quatre mouchetures. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (France, duchy of Brittany, John IV, 1345-99, silver blanc, Nantes mint. Obverse: scalloped polylobe charged with six ermines; reverse: cross cantonned with four ermines. Rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

John IV was ruler of the semi-independent duchy of Brittany who spent several periods of exile in England, most notably 1373-79. Edward III of England made him a member of the Order of the Garter and Earl of Richmond in 1375.
