British West Africa 1938 6 pence
This specimen was lot 32546 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony. George VI nickel-brass Proof 6 Pence 1938 PR67 Cameo NGC. The absolute finest certified example of the type, flawless in nearly every respect, a subtle iridescence pervading the watery texture of the fields, and George VI's bust taking on a distinctive resoluteness that can only be the result of the coin's extra fine level of detail. Ex. Arielle Collection." This type was struck 1938-47 and this is a common date. The last sixpence was struck in 1952. As all of the former British colonies in West Africa are now independent, the coinage is obsolete.
