British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71161 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Shilling, 1913. London Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. An eye pleasing example with some soft dark toning to the left of King George." This is the most common date of a type struck 1913-20.

Recorded mintage: 8,800,000 plus proofs plus more from Heaton.
