Künker sale 352, lot 1886

This specimen was lot 1886 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$16,701 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRETZENHEIM, GRAFSCHAFT, Karl August, 1789-1803. Dukat 1790, Mannheim. 3.47 g. Büste r. darunter die Signatur S (Medailleur Anton Schäffer)//Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild Brezel auf Malteserkreuz, umher Ordenskette, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 90. GOLD. RR Prachtexemplar. Winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben 1941 bei der Firma Adolph Hess Nachf. Frankfurt am Main. (Germany, county of Bretzenheim, Charles August, 1789-1803, ducat of 1790, Mannheim mint. Obverse: bust right, engraver's initials below; reverse: quartered arms on a Maltese cross and order chain divide the date. Very rare, choice example, minor scratches, extremely fine to uncirculated. Bought from Adolph Hess in 1941.)

Karl August war ein leiblicher Sohn von Karl Theodor von Pfalz-Sulzbach aus der Ehe mit Josefine Seifert, geadelte Gräfin Heideck. Er heiratete Maria Walburga Fürstin von Öttingen-Spielberg, eine Hofdame der Kurfürstin und starb 1825 in Wien. (Karl August was the morganatic son of Karl Theodor von Pfalz-Sulzbach from his marriage to Josefine Seifert, ennobled as Countess Heideck. He married Princess Maria Walburga von Öttingen-Spielberg, a lady-in-waiting to the Electress, and died in Vienna in 1825.)"

The count also issued a ten kreuzer, twenty kreuzer, half thaler and thaler, all dated 1790. Bretzenheim, in the Palatinate, passed to Baden in 1803.
