Bremen 1635 goldgulden Fr-399
This specimen was lot 5207 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$11,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BREMEN, STADT, Goldgulden 1635, mit Titel Ferdinands II. Zwei Löwen halten den Bremer Wappenschild//Gekrönter Doppeladler. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Kl. Randausbruch, winz. Risse im Feld der Vorderseite, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Bremen, goldgulde of 1635, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Obverse: two lions support the Bremen arms; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Extremely rare, edge chip and evidence of a crease on the obverse, very fine.)"
While there is an extensive series of minor billon coinage from this Hanseatic town on the North Sea, thalers and gold coins are few. This goldgulden is accompanied by another goldgulden (Fr-400) with the date in the legend.
