Brazil 1921 20000 reis
This specimen was lot 23182 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $5,728.13. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20000 Reis 1921, MS63 NGC. Rather attractive as a result of a strong strike and prooflike fields on both sides. Certainly worthy of the Choice grade and not far from the next grading tier. The finest example seen by NGC to date." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 10000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. It is much more available than its smaller sister. Most survivors are graded AU because of heavy bagmarks rather than wear.
Recorded mintage: 5,924.
Specification: 17.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, .528 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 497, Russo-736, Fr-124.
