This date, one of a series struck 1853-89, is among the moderately priced gold coins of the Empire of Brazil. This specimen was lot 23124 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 10000 Reis 1878, MS62 NGC. Enchanting, coruscating luster enlivens both sides with sharp central detail throughout. Struck from an interesting obverse die state with multiple die cracks circling the centers."
