Brazil 1865 1000 reis
This specimen was lot 71098 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 1000 Reis, 1865. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. A fully brilliant and handsome example, this exceptional plus Gem is tied with just two other specimens for the finest graded by PCGS. The surfaces are wholly argent, with an alluring golden-russet tone as one approaches the peripheries." This thousand réis is one of a type struck in Brazil 1853-66. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is common. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900.
