This specimen was lot 70389 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 500 Reis, 1862. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-65+ Gold Shield. Another top spot Gem minor, this blistering specimen presents an incredibly sharp strike to pair with its intense brilliance and light peripheral toning." This five hundred réis is one of a type struck in Brazil 1853-66. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is common. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 6.38 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-464.
