Brazil 1861 200 reis

from Stack's Bowers June 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70368

This specimen was lot 70368 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 200 Reis, 1861. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. NGC MS-65. This pleasing Gem displays a stunning coating of mint luster and light toning, giving this piece a fresh and handsome appearance." This two hundred réis was issued 1854-67. It superseded a larger coin (KM 455) struck 1835-48. Its replacement bears the portrait of emperor Pedro II (KM 471) and is slightly lighter.
