Brazil 1851 2000 reis
The first specimen was lot 1295 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $193.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL, Empire. Pedro II. 1831-1889. AR 2000 Réis. Rio de Janeiro mint. Dated 1851. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Brilliant uncirculated specimen. Two year only type, this being the first year. Only one graded higher in 65. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, December 1981." This silver 2000 réis was minted 1851-52 in Rio de Janeiro. The series came accompanied by 200, 500 and 1000 réis in silver. The 2000 réis was roughly the same weight as the preceding 960 réis of 1810-33 and 1200 réis of 1834-47. Despite the two year mintage, it is more common that the succeeding type of 1853-67, which had a slightly modified reverse.
