This specimen was lot 1279 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1955. The catalog description[1] noted, "1849 20,000 reis. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. Bright yellow gold with strong lustre and reflective surfaces. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This date, the first of a series struck 1849-51, is scarce but the other two are reasonable and are the first moderately priced gold coins of the Empire.

Recorded mintage: 6,464.

Specification: 17.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, .528 troy oz; this specimen: 17.89 grams, 30.20 mm diameter.
