Brazil 1813-B 960 reis
This silver 960 réis was minted at the Bahia mint 1810-17. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars but many other undertypes are known. Large quantities were produced, making this and the similar Rio issue the commonest Brazilian silver coin of the colonial period. The first specimen was lot 20471 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010). The catalog description[1] noted, "João Prince Regent 960 Reis 1813B, variety with REGENES, toned XF, bold details including the B mintmark." The second specimen was lot 306 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRAZIL. 960 Reis, 1813-B. NGC MS-62. 'REGENES' in legend. Overstruck on Ferdinand VII 8 Reales of Mexico." The third specimen was lot 40097 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $26,840. The catalog description[3] noted, "Impressive Napoleonic War Spanish Host, One of Only Three Known, BRAZIL. 960 Reis, 1813-B. Bahia Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. PCGS AU-55. Overstruck on an 1808 Gerona Spain Duro (5 Pesetas) (KM-10). One of only three known examples of this host for a 960 Reis, the present example being newly discovered and an earlier date and mint overstrike than the two other known pieces, 1816-R and 1817-R. This original looking example displays rich mottled envelope patina displaying areas of slate and argent coloration with hints of russet. When tilted in the light a slight cobalt iridescent sheen pops out adding to its wholesome appearance. An EXTREMELY RARE issue that is sure to garner much attention from the specialist seeking difficult to obtain hosts from this series." The SCWC lists the "P. REGENS." variety as common and the "P. REGENES" variety as scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
